Ear irrigation is a commonly used ear wax removal technique that uses a gentle stream of warm water to flush softened wax from the ear canal. The procedure is designed to clear blockages, improve hearing, and relieve symptoms associated with excessive wax build-up.
Before carrying out irrigation, a thorough assessment of your ears will always be undertaken to ensure the treatment is suitable and safe for you. In some cases, microsuction may be recommended as a more appropriate alternative depending on your ear health and medical history.
Your appointment will begin with an examination of your ears using specialist equipment to assess the condition of the ear canal and identify any wax build-up.
If irrigation is considered appropriate, warm water will be gently introduced into the ear canal to help loosen and remove softened wax. The procedure is generally quick, comfortable, and well tolerated by most patients.
Following treatment, your ears may be re-examined to ensure the wax has been successfully removed and to check the overall health of the ear canal.
For the best possible results, we recommend using olive oil drops for 3–5 days before your appointment, unless advised otherwise. Softening the wax beforehand can make removal easier, more effective, and more comfortable.
